Collaborating with Brazza International Foundation, MPH Students Lead Transformative Health Fair in Ghana
Three Master of Public Health Students from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Ekua Yeboah, Paige Wallace, and Jannatiah, had the opportunity of traveling to Ghana for their practicum in collaboration with the Brazza International Foundation.
The goal of the exercise was to provide basic health services to the Kumawu people. The main target areas were:
1. To identify and assess common risk factors associated with various health conditions.
2. To raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of chronic diseases including Breast Cancer.
3. To provide individuals with personalized health information and recommendations for a healthier lifestyle.
4. To provide reproductive health counseling and education for the youth.
All three students played different roles in the planning and organization of an impactful health fair in Kumawu-Besoro. For the past six months, each Global Health Intern has worked hard to make Brazza’s vision a reality.
The Brazza-JHU team, and partners, provided free medical screening services and medications to over 800 children and adults in the Kumawu area. The team also distributed 150 free sanitary pads to the young girls in the area. The team educated the inhabitants on healthy lifestyle practices to promote good health and prevent illnesses.
This practicum experience provided different avenues to practice the lessons learnt from the didactic sessions at school, powering a real-world application opportunity. These included identifying different stakeholders and partners, developing health education and health promotion materials and content, and integrating perspectives from other sectors to make the exercise successful.
The community leaders and inhabitants of the area expressed their profound gratitude to the team for organizing this exercise. The feedback from the inhabitants was overwhelming.
Ekua, Paige, and Jannatiah, extend their heartfelt thanks to the Johns Hopkins University and the Brazza International Foundation for this opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the local people of Kumawu, Ghana. It is our hope that the positive energy generated by the health fair will continue to inspire collaboration and progress within the Kumawu community in the future.
